A two-storey prayer hall at Wat Amornyatsamakom in Ratchaburi province unexpectedly collapsed, causing extensive damage valued at approximately 8 million baht. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, which took place yesterday, March 12, at 5.20pm.

District chief Suwitchat Nawamphet visited the temple, located in Mueang district’s Thana subdistrict, following reports of the collapse.

He met with Phra Khru Amorn Wisutthaporn, the district chief monk and abbot of Wat Amornyatsamakom, along with other monks and residents.

They were in the process of clearing the debris from the roof tiles and salvaging items from the prayer hall, including numerous alms bowls and kitchen equipment.

Phra Khru Amorn Wisutthaporn revealed that the prayer hall, used for daily meals and prayer sessions, showed signs of structural weakness two days prior.

The roof started to sag, prompting plans to hire a contractor for demolition. However, the collapse occurred before the scheduled work today, March 13.

Built in 1970, the 55 year old structure suffered termite damage, contributing to its deterioration. As a precaution, the monks have been advised to avoid the area, opting to walk alongside the hall instead, reported KhaoSod.

Immediate dismantling of the structure is underway to prevent further damage from potential rainfall. Plans for reconstruction remain tentative, with the initial focus on ensuring safety and clearing the affected area.

In similar news, a family of three was forced to flee their home in Rayong after their roof collapsed due to severe termite damage.

Rescuers from the Sawang Phonkusol Rayong Foundation responded to the incident on March 4 at a residence in Soi Koh Kloy 5, Mueang district. Fortunately, the homeowner, her husband, and their child were outside at the time and remained unharmed.

The collapse occurred in the centre of the house, leaving behind a damaged iron structure and scattered roof tiles.

The homeowner, Chutimaporn, recounted that she was in the hallway with her child while her husband was in the bedroom when the roof gave way.
