Thai mechanic found dead in sewer highlights lethal risks of heavy drinking
Tragedy struck when a 44 year old mechanic, known for his drinking habits, was found dead in a sewer in front of Wat Khae School, located in Pak Klong Bang Pla Kod, Phra Samut Chedi district, Samut Prakan province.
The incident was reported today, December 8, at around 7.30am by residents and the local authorities. The tragic discovery was made after the deceased’s wife, 48 year old Siriporn, failed to reach her husband, Wichit, after a domestic dispute the previous night.
The scene revealed a grim sight of Wichit’s body lying face down inside the sewer. The mechanic was wearing a short-sleeved white shirt with yellow stripes, green three-quarter length trousers, and black flip-flops.
The inspection revealed a wound on his left forehead, leading authorities to believe that he had been dead for no less than eight to nine hours. The news was broken to Siriporn, who was overcome with grief. She revealed that her husband was a mechanic in an animal feed production company.
The night before the incident, Wichit was seen drinking with his workmates at a shop just 20 metres away from the scene. Following a heated argument with Siriporn around 9pm, the mechanic left for home. Despite Siriporn’s efforts to contact him, she was unsuccessful.
The following morning, her worst fears were confirmed when a co-worker found Wichit’s body in the sewer, reported KhaoSod.
Preliminary investigations disclosed that Wichit was known for drinking heavily and often urinating at the spot where he was found. Past instances of him falling into the sewer were also reported.
It is believed that on the night of the incident, after the argument with his wife, Wichit had been drinking at the same shop. He then went to urinate at the familiar spot, but due to the darkness and his drunken state, he lost his balance, fell into the sewer, and hit his head on a large stone, leading to his untimely demise.
However, to ascertain the exact cause of death, Wichit’s body was sent to the forensic institute for further examination.
