Lightning alert: Severe storms to hit 55 provinces in Thailand

Heavy thunderstorms will cover most of Thailand, with increased rainfall and hail

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for today, predicting severe storms to impact 55 provinces across Thailand.

Approximately 60% of the affected areas will experience heavy rainfall, strong winds, and some hail. The northeastern region is anticipated to be hit by summer storms, characterised by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and occasional hail. Other regions will begin to experience these effects shortly thereafter.

This weather activity is attributed to a moderate high-pressure area moving from China to cover Vietnam and the South China Sea. This results in southeasterly and southerly winds bringing moisture from the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to the upper part of Thailand, where the weather remains hot to extremely hot.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to avoid travelling through thunderstorms and stay indoors, away from large trees, unstable structures, and billboards. Farmers should reinforce their crops and protect agricultural produce and livestock from potential storm damage. In the south, rainfall will increase, with heavy rain expected in certain areas. This is due to strengthening westerly and southwesterly winds over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea will have waves about 1 metre high, rising to over 2 metres in thunderstorm areas. Sailors are advised to avoid these areas.

Dust accumulation in Thailand remains low to moderate due to prevailing southern and southwesterly winds.

Weather forecast

Hot to extremely hot conditions in the north with thunderstorms will affect 40% of the area, including Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 40°C with southwesterly winds at 5-15 km/h.
