Lampang celebrates revered monk’s 112th birthday

Lampang is set to host a significant annual event entitled, Following the Path of Faith: Paying Homage to Venerable Luang Phor Kasem Khemko, marking the revered monk’s 112th birthday. This unique event will feature rarely seen traditional Lanna ceremonies and offerings.

The event, organised by the local government of Lampang, will take place over three days and nights, from November 27 to 29. The highlight coincides with Luang Phor Kasem Khemko’s birthday on November 28.

This culturally rich celebration will include a procession of traditional Lanna offerings, a rare spectacle for attendees. This event has become a significant annual tradition for the city and province of Lampang, drawing crowds who wish to honour the spiritual legacy of Luang Phor Kasem Khemko.

Tanarat Saithip, the district chief of Mueang Lampang, expressed that the event holds great importance for the community, serving as a platform to uphold and promote the local cultural heritage.

The schedule includes sacred rituals such as the offering of kitchenware in honour of the monk, Dharma sermons, and the chanting of Buddhist scriptures, all dedicated to venerating the late Luang Phor Kasem Khemko.

“The event is an embodiment of the community’s deep faith in Luang Phor Kasem Khemko, allowing everyone to partake in the spiritual and cultural richness of Lampang.”

In addition to the main ceremonies, the event will feature various activities designed to engage attendees and provide a holistic cultural experience. There will be food offerings to monks, Dharma sermons, and Abhidhamma chanting ceremonies.

Furthermore, the event will also host a bustling market featuring local products, including items from the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) initiative. These markets will offer visitors an opportunity to purchase local crafts, affordable goods, and organic agricultural products, highlighting the region’s economic and cultural diversity.

The event is a collaborative effort, involving various stakeholders such as the Trirak Khama Bhikkhu Foundation, provincial and district government officials, local administrative organisations, educational institutions, and community leaders from Mueang Lampang. These groups are united in their commitment to honouring Luang Phor Kasem Khemko, whose teachings and legacy continue to inspire many.

Lampang province sees this celebration as an opportunity to attract tourists due to its timing during the high season in northern Thailand. Visitors can enjoy the cool weather while immersing themselves in the rich cultural and spiritual tapestry of the region. This period offers a unique chance to experience the natural beauty of Lampang, alongside the warmth of its community and spiritual heritage.
