Krabi ferry operators found drug positive suspended
Police in Krabi conducted a random drug test on ferry operators and crew members at Koh Lanta, resulting in several individuals testing positive for drugs. The operators, found with purple urine, have been suspended and will undergo rehabilitation.
The joint operation involved local administrative officers from Koh Lanta district and regional marine department officials. They carried out these surprise urine tests on ferry operators and crew members providing tourist services at Saladan Pier in Saladan subdistrict, Koh Lanta. The presence of purple urine indicated drug use among several individuals, prompting officers to halt their services and process their rehabilitation.
In addition to drug testing, officials inspected various safety and operational aspects of the ferry services. They checked the licences of boat operators, engine mechanics, and the registration of the vessels. Essential safety equipment, such as life jackets, was also scrutinised. Police emphasised the importance of tourists wearing life jackets while on board, especially during this busy holiday season with the Christmas and new year festivities drawing numerous visitors to the region.
Meanwhile, at the Krabi branch of the regional marine department, officials extended their safety checks to the ferry services at Koh Phi Phi Pier in Ao Nang subdistrict, Mueang Krabi district. These inspections aimed to ensure compliance with safety regulations, and no legal violations were found. The focus on safety comes at a time when the area is experiencing a high influx of tourists enjoying the region’s marine attractions.
Officials expressed concern over the safety of passengers and stressed the importance of maintaining strict safety standards during this peak tourist season.
One official highlighted the importance of regular safety checks and drug tests, stating that maintaining high standards is crucial to the reputation of Krabi as a tourist destination, reported KhaoSod.
Local officials and tourism operators are aware of the significance of ensuring safety and compliance, particularly during periods of high tourist activity. The measures taken reflect broader efforts to enhance the safety and quality of tourism services in the region.
