Elephant overturns tourist car at Khao Yai National Park (video)

A wild elephant overturned a tourist’s car near their accommodation at Khao Yai National Park, resulting in significant damage. The incident, captured on video and shared on TikTok, sparked discussions about the absence of warning signs and safety protocols.

Today, August 14, news emerged about a wild elephant at Khao Yai National Park causing substantial damage to a black Honda Jazz belonging to a tourist. The event took place on August 11, and the video quickly went viral on social media, showing the elephant overturning the car.

The video’s creator posted a follow-up explanation.

“Before the incident, park officials had already ensured safety in the area, and there were no signs indicating that parking was prohibited since it was near the tourist accommodation. Officials had warned that elephants might come down to forage, as they had done the previous day.

“The car owner was not present during the warning, and the officials monitored the area for nearly two hours before leaving, confident that the elephants would not return.”

Shortly after the officials left, approximately five elephants indeed descended from the forest, likely in search of food.

Overturned vehicle

The tourists in the area were taken aback, as they had only expected the elephants to pass by. Instead, one elephant approached and sniffed the car, which was the nearest object, leading to the dramatic overturning captured in the video, reported KhaoSod.

The car owner, resting inside their accommodation, was unaware of the incident until the vehicle was already overturned. The video creator emphasised it was no one’s fault.

“It was an unforeseen event. The elephant was not aggressive and did not harm anyone. Everyone on site was safe, and it seemed the elephant was simply hungry and happened to pass by the car. Please refrain from assigning blame. We were visiting a natural environment and we should be more cautious in the future.”

In response, Khao Yai National Park Chief Chaiya Huayhongthong explained the cause of the incident, stating that some tourists, not the car owner, had been cooking in an area where it was prohibited. The smell of food likely attracted the elephants.

“Khao Yai National Park is home to wild animals. Visitors must adhere to park regulations and follow the instructions of park officials meticulously.”
