Hopefuls flock to central Thailand temple for lottery blessings
Locals trust ancient rituals to bring fortune ahead of the big draw

Lottery dreams are being made and broken at a temple in Nakhon Pathom, central Thailand, where visitors are hoping for a divine touch from the revered Thao Wessuwan.
A steady stream of worshippers arrived yesterday, August 27, at Wat Klang Bang Phra in Bang Phra subdistrict, eager to participate in merit-making activities and seek blessings from the temple’s sacred figures. Among the most revered is Luang Phor Somwang, but it is the historic Thao Wessuwan statue that draws countless devotees, particularly those hoping for a little extra luck in their lives.
The Thao Wessuwan statue, originally crafted from cement during the time of the late monk Luang Phor Phut, has been meticulously restored and freshly painted, preserving its striking appearance. Worshippers, drawn by its mystique, often decorate it with red cloths, incense sticks, candles, and roses as part of their rituals.
Every day, visitors engage in a variety of time-honoured practices, including offering red cloth talismans and red roses, lighting incense, and tying their offerings to the deity’s staff. Many make a wish before drawing a numbered egg from a jar, hoping the numbers will bring good fortune.
Some devotees also partake in the colourful fortune incense ritual, lighting sticks in shades representing the days of the week: red, yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, and purple.
Among those seeking divine intervention was 50 year old Siri Porn, who shared her experience of tying a red cloth to Thao Wessuwan’s staff and making her wishes. After drawing the numbers 4, 2, and 6 from the jar, Siri lit a red fortune incense stick, which revealed 7, 7, and 8, KhaoSod reported.
Confident that these numbers might be lucky, she expressed her devotion not only to Luang Phor Somwang but also to Thao Wessuwan, particularly with the lottery draw looming.
“If these numbers bring me luck, I will return with red soda and roses as a gesture of gratitude. I have been fortunate before here, and I believe the temple has a special power.”
The deep personal connection that many locals feel towards the temple, especially the red offerings, reflects the community’s trust in Thao Wessuwan’s ability to deliver good fortune. Whether it’s through lottery wins or business success, Wat Klang Bang Phra continues to be a beacon of hope and faith.
