Valentine’s Day sees surge in LGBTQ+ marriage registrations

The government anticipates a significant number of LGBTQ+ couples will register their marriages today in celebration of Valentine’s Day, according to deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Wattanachan.

Sasikarn mentioned that numerous events are planned to support same-sex marriages across district offices nationwide on Valentine’s Day.

In Bangkok’s Bang Rak district, renowned for Valentine’s marriage registrations, the district office will provide services at the Jewellery Trade Centre Building in Silom, accommodating online reservations for 999 couples. Additionally, gold marriage certificates will be available through a lucky draw.

Chatuchak district office, in collaboration with the State Railway of Thailand, is hosting a Love in the Sky event, offering marriage registration to 30 couples on the Red Line.

Lak Si will facilitate registrations at Lak Si Infinity Park, located in front of the district office, marking the first such event in the park with accompanying musical performances.

In Bang Sue, couples are encouraged to register their marriages at Gateway in Bang Sue Shopping Mall, while the Bang Khun Thian district office will provide the service at Central Rama II shopping mall, reported Bangkok Post.

“The government extends congratulations to all couples registering their marriages, affirming legal love and supporting marriage equality so that all love is officially recognised.”

On January 23, 1,754 same-sex couples registered their marriages following the enactment of the Marriage Equality Act.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration expected around 300 same-sex couples to register their marriages in the capital on January 23, as the Marriage Equality Law came into effect.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon inspected district offices to ensure smooth preparations, with officials trained to assist couples through the process.

Over 100 couples have pre-registered, with 67 choosing to formalise their marriages at Siam Paragon, while the rest registered at various district offices across the city.

Bang Rak district, known as the “Love Hamlet,” was expected to be a popular location, with People’s Party MPs Thanyawat Kamolwongwat and Paramet Witthayaraksan visiting the office to review arrangements.
