Man arrested for snatching and pawning gold necklace in Bangkok
A 27 year old man was arrested for snatching a foreigner’s gold necklace weighing 10 baht, later pawned to fuel his online gambling habit. The arrest took place yesterday, November 28, following a detailed investigation by Phayathai Police Station officers.
The incident occurred in early October when a foreign national reported being robbed while walking along Phetchaburi Soi 15, Ratchathewi, Bangkok. The suspect, wearing a helmet, rode a motorcycle and snatched the necklace from the victim’s neck before fleeing the scene.
Officers, led by Phayathai Police Station’s senior officers, identified the culprit as Sarawut Thongburan. They gathered substantial evidence leading to a court-issued arrest warrant dated Wednesday, November 27. The charge was robbery using a vehicle.
Sarawut confessed during interrogation, admitting to the crime on that specific day. He explained that he pawned the gold necklace, valued at around 10 baht, at a pawnshop in Bang Phlat, Bangkok, receiving 360,000 baht.
The money was squandered on expenses and online gambling, which ultimately left him penniless. Further background checks on Sarawut revealed a past criminal record involving theft at a residence in Warin Chamrap in 2020.
The arrest was executed at a dormitory in Din Daeng, Bangkok, where officers seized a white Honda PCX motorcycle, registration 7 ขภ 5929 Bangkok, and a pawn receipt. Sarawut now faces legal proceedings at Phayathai Police Station, reported KhaoSod.
In related news, a startling case of theft has emerged from a gold shop in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, where a housekeeper has been accused of stealing gold worth over 20 million baht since 2021. Despite clear CCTV evidence, the accused continues to deny the charges in court.
In other news, Patong Police investigated the theft of a gold necklace from a foreign tourist in Soi Sea Dragon, off Bangla Road, which took place on October 4. The incident, which occurred around 12.20am in front of a bar, was reported by the victim to the police.
