Bangkok gridlock: Holidaymakers return with dried goods
The roads leading back to Bangkok have become increasingly crowded as northeastern Thai residents return after celebrating new year festivities with their families in the provinces.
Traffic reporters noted heavy congestion throughout the day on the Friendship Highway, which saw a steady stream of cars heading towards the capital. Although some sections of the road experienced smoother traffic flow, minor slowdowns were observed at inclines and intersections, particularly around petrol stations where many travellers stopped for a break.
Petrol stations were bustling with activity, serving as key rest points for those on the road. Many vehicles were seen loaded with various supplies, including staples like rice and dried foods. A particularly noteworthy item making its way back to Bangkok with these travellers was pla ra, a traditional northeastern fermented fish delicacy, which was packed in abundance, reported KhaoSod.
One traveller, Ang, a resident of Nakhon Ratchasima province, shared his experience.
“I don’t often return to Korat, only once in a while, not every year. This year, I made a point to come back because we had a family reunion planned. I’m taking some rice back, which is our homegrown harvest. Besides that, I’ve packed dried fish and pla ra to enjoy back in Bangkok.”
In related news, real-time traffic management is a priority for Police Region 2 during the new year festive period, utilising drone technology to monitor and address traffic issues. The focus is on two major routes connecting to the northeastern region, with measures including vehicle dispersal and law enforcement to reduce accidents.
In other news, Phuket is gearing up for a major infrastructure facelift with a slew of secondary road developments aimed at easing traffic woes and boosting tourism. Officials unveiled the ambitious plan at a press conference chaired by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwanarat at Provincial Hall on Friday, December 20, showcasing a roadmap for smoother travel and economic growth.
