Bangkok: Car and pickup plunge into canal, five injured
A dramatic accident occurred when a car and a pickup truck plunged into a drainage canal beside a road in Bangkok, submerging both vehicles and leaving five people injured from water inhalation. Rescuers promptly assisted and transported the injured to hospital for urgent care.
Ekphop Painuea, a police inspector from Chokchai Station, received a report at 12.10am today of a vehicle accident involving multiple casualties near the entrance of Soi Praditmanutham 21 on Ramintra Expressway, Ladprao district, Bangkok.
Responding swiftly with volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, police arrived at the scene to find the accident site on the outbound side of the road, heading towards Huamum Market. Overlooking a drainage canal approximately 5 metres wide, they discovered a black Toyota Cross with Bangkok registration, severely damaged at both ends and submerged on its side. Inside the vehicle were two women, 65 year old Akirap and 30 year old Thanisorn who are mother and daughter, suffering from minor injuries and water inhalation, struggling to escape the car.
Good Samaritans and rescue volunteers successfully assisted the two women, transporting them to Paolo Chokchai 4 Hospital. Additionally, they found a grey Toyota Vigo pickup truck, also with Bangkok registration, overturned with its wheels up and fully submerged. Three men, 33 year old Komon; Kittisak, and Pongsathorn, both 24 years old, were rescued from the vehicle, all showing signs of water inhalation and minor bodily injuries. Two were taken to Paolo Chokchai 4 Hospital, while the third was sent to Phyathai Nawamin Hospital.
A rescue volunteer mentioned that upon receiving the report and arriving at the scene, they found both vehicles completely submerged in the canal. The incident left three men and two women injured, all of whom were safely rescued and transported to hospital. Initial assessments revealed that all individuals were conscious and able to communicate.
The location is notorious for frequent accidents due to the road’s incline near a bridge. Vehicles travelling at high speed are prone to losing control. In this incident, it is suspected that excessive speed or a collision between the vehicles led to them crashing into the canal barrier, causing both to plunge into the water.
Ekphop stated that all five injured individuals are still undergoing treatment in hospital. Investigations will be conducted once their conditions improve to determine who was driving. Preliminary information suggests that both vehicles were on their way home. It is known that the Toyota car was equipped with a dashcam, which is currently being examined to uncover more details about the accident, reported KhaoSod.
