Thai weather alert: storms and strong winds in 53 provinces

Flash flood potential rises as seasonal storms hit

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for May 9 regarding severe weather conditions across 53 provinces.

The northeast will experience summer storms with thunderstorms, strong winds, and occasional hail. Residents are advised to stay alert and avoid open areas during these conditions.

A moderate high-pressure system from China is expected to cover Vietnam and the South China Sea tonight, bringing southeasterly and southerly winds that will spread moisture over upper Thailand. This, combined with the hot to very hot weather, will lead to summer storms in the northeast.

Residents in these areas should exercise caution and avoid travelling through stormy regions. It is advised not to remain in open spaces, under large trees, or near unstable structures and billboards. Farmers are encouraged to strengthen their crops and take measures to protect agricultural produce and livestock.

The south will see isolated thunderstorms due to weakening west and southwesterly winds over the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand. Maritime conditions in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are expected to have waves up to 1 metre high and over 2 metres in stormy areas. Mariners are advised to avoid sailing in these conditions.

Dust and haze accumulation in upper Thailand is expected to remain low to moderate due to the prevailing southern and southwesterly winds.
