Monsoon trough brings heavy rain to 50 Thai provinces

Widespread downpours heighten risk of sudden flooding

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has announced that a monsoon trough will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across 50 provinces, significantly affecting three regions including Bangkok, with 80% of the area expected to experience rain. The forecast for August 16 warns of potential flash floods and mountain runoffs due to significant rain accumulation.

Residents in provinces such as Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phang Nga are advised to exercise caution due to heavy rainfall and possible flooding, especially in mountainous and low-lying areas.

The monsoon trough extends across lower northern Thailand, upper central Thailand, and northeastern Thailand, leading to a low-pressure system over the upper South China Sea. Additionally, a strong southwest monsoon covers the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, with a low-pressure area over upper Thailand.

The TMD has indicated that the upper Andaman Sea is experiencing strong winds and waves reaching 2 to 3 metres, with thunderstorm areas having waves over 3 metres.

In the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, waves of approximately 2 metres are expected, with thunderstorm areas experiencing waves over 2 metres.

Mariners are urged to navigate carefully and avoid sailing in stormy areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to stay ashore until August 17.
