Heavy rain alert as tropical depression affects Thai provinces

Rivers on watch as storm surges threaten low-lying communities

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its eighth notice regarding the tropical depression Nong Fa, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Thai provinces. Residents are urged to be cautious of flash floods and forest run-off from today, August 31, to tomorrow, September 1.

At 4am today, August 31, the intense low-pressure area, which had weakened from tropical depression Nong Fa, moved along the monsoon trough covering Loei province. It is expected to extend over northern Thailand on the same day.

This influence will result in continuous rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rain anticipated in the northern and northeastern regions, particularly in Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Loei, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Lower Nan, Phrae, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Tak, and Mae Hong Son.

The weather forecast today, August 31 highlights that the northern provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun, along with northeastern provinces such as Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Loei, Chaiyaphum, and Khon Kaen, will experience significant rainfall.

Central provinces Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi are also on alert, as are eastern provinces Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. In the south, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi are expected to be affected.

Tomorrow, September 1, similar warnings extend to northern provinces Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. The northeastern provinces of Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Ubon Ratchathani are also listed.

Tropical depression

The central provinces of Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi are on alert, as are eastern provinces Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Southern provinces Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi are advised to prepare for heavy rain.

The strengthening southwesterly monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand will lead to heavy rain in the east and the west coast of the south. The upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will experience strong winds, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres high and over 3 metres in thundery areas.

Mariners should exercise caution, avoid sailing in stormy areas, and small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and Gulf should remain ashore. Coastal residents in the east and upper west coast of the south should be aware of waves crashing ashore from today, August 31, to September 2, reported KhaoSod.

Residents are advised to stay updated with the TMD announcements and can check their website or contact them for information. The next announcement will be issued today, August 31, at 11am.
