The shooting occurred on February 17 at 11.38am in the mountainous area of Ban Rai, Mueang district, Nan province. Due to the steep terrain, doctors and forensic officers from Somdet Phra Yuparat Pua Hospital were unable to reach the scene immediately, though investigators and relevant officers managed to arrive.

Upon arrival, they found the body of 60 year old Som lying on his back, wearing jeans and a long-sleeve shirt. A gunshot wound was visible on his right temple, with blood found at the scene. Attaporn, a 27 year old local from Mueang district, was waiting to surrender with a long shotgun in hand.

Police documented the scene and later transported the body to Somdet Phra Yuparat Pua Hospital for a preliminary autopsy.

Initial investigations revealed that Som and Attaporn had entered the national park with firearms to hunt. They separated to hunt at different locations.

Som instructed Attaporn to wait at one spot while he moved to another. Attaporn claimed he saw what he believed to be a wild boar near a tree and fired his gun.
