Man in Phuket arrested after attempted abduction of 14 year old girl
Police in Phuket arrested a man on January 24, after an attempted abduction of a 14 year old girl in Kamala. The incident unfolded early in the morning when the girl narrowly avoided harm with the intervention of a hotel security guard and nearby residents.
The girl, referred to by the pseudonym Ploy, was waiting for her school bus near Soi Bluma in Kamala at approximately 5.50am when a man approached her. He initially inquired about the arrival of her bus, but upon receiving no response, grabbed her by the neck and threatened her with a knife, attempting to drag her into an alley.
A hotel security guard and residents noticed the disturbance and intervened, leading to the suspect releasing the girl. When her bus arrived, the driver found her crying near the hotel, surrounded by villagers offering comfort. The driver then took her to school and reported the incident to her family and Kamala Police.
Kamala Police Chief, Police Colonel Somsak Thongkliang, received the report at 10.30am and ordered an immediate investigation. With aid from village leaders and security footage, they identified the suspect as Han Mo Aung, a 39 year old Myanmar national living at a nearby workers’ camp.
Within 12 hours of the report, police arrested Han at the camp, seizing key evidence, including the knife allegedly used in the incident and the clothes he wore at the time. Pol. Col. Somsak praised the collaboration between local police, residents, and community leaders, highlighting their vigilance and quick action.
He also advised parents to accompany their children to bus stops, especially in isolated areas, to prevent future incidents. Han now faces multiple charges, including illegal residency, attempted abduction for indecent purposes, and unlawful weapon use. He remains in custody at Kamala Police Station for further questioning and legal proceedings, reported The Phuket News.
