Phuket is gearing up to host disadvantaged youth from Thailand’s Deep South as part of the San Jai Thai Su Jai Tai project, an initiative designed to bridge cultural gaps and provide life-changing experiences for young people from conflict-affected regions.

Phuket Provincial Chief Administrative Officer, Thiraphong Chuaychu, announced the initiative at a meeting held at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday, February 19.

The project, organised by the San Jai Thai Su Jai Tai Foundation, will take place in April across Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi.

The programme aims to support 120 youths from Thailand’s five southern border provinces, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun, and Songkhla, who face economic challenges, educational disadvantages, or have been affected by regional unrest.

Participants, aged 15 to 19 and currently enrolled in public or private educational institutions, will stay with 20 host families in Phuket for 15 days, with two youths assigned per family.

To ensure the programme’s success, the Phuket Provincial Office has established a steering committee led by a Vice Governor, with Thiraphong as a key member.

Their responsibilities include overseeing the project, monitoring progress, and ensuring suitable host family placements.

The selection process will cover three districts: Mueang Phuket (seven families and one reserve), Thalang (seven families and one reserve), and Kathu (six families and one reserve).

During the meeting, plans were also discussed for educational excursions, including visits to Phuket Old Town, the historic Chinpracha House Museum, and the Thai Hua Museum.

“These activities aim to provide the youth with a deeper understanding of Phuket’s cultural and historical heritage.”

An orientation session for the chosen host families is scheduled for Monday, February 24 at the Phu-Nga Hotel in Mueang district, Phang Nga province, reported The Phuket News.

“The San Jai Thai Su Jai Tai project plays a crucial role in fostering understanding and strengthening relationships between youth from the southern border region and other parts of the country.”

Thiraphong added that the initiative aims to empower young people to positively impact their communities and the nation.
