China’s high-tech research ship docks in Phuket

In a grand display of diplomatic and scientific collaboration, Phuket welcomed China’s cutting-edge marine research vessel, R.V. Xiang Yang Hong 01, in a ceremony marking 50 years of Thailand-China relations.

The reception, held at the Phuket Deep Sea Port yesterday, February 3, was presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong and attended by senior officials from both nations.

Among them were Pinsak Suraswadi, Director General of Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), Professor Dr Li Tianyang, Director of the Chinese Institute of Oceanography, and Vice Admiral Klaturat Chulalayanon, representing the Royal Thai Navy.

The vessel, a state-of-the-art oceanographic research ship, will be used to train Thai students in advanced marine research techniques. Vice Governor Adul highlighted Phuket’s growing role in international scientific cooperation.

“The Xiang Yang Hong 01 plays an important role in marine research and oceanographic technology, symbolising the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between Thailand and China in scientific innovation.”

Beyond tourism and trade, Thailand and China have been expanding their partnership in marine science and technology.

During the event, an onboard exhibition showcased groundbreaking research on marine conservation and sustainable resource management, aligning with both nations’ policies on environmental protection and blue economy development.

Attendees toured the vessel’s high-tech research facilities, gaining insights into how oceanographic studies could shape future marine exploration. Closing the event, Vice Governor Adul delivered a congratulatory speech, expressing optimism for continued Thailand-China cooperation in marine science, reported The Phuket News.

In similar news, Pattaya hosted 5,400 US Navy personnel from January 27 to 31 as they took a break from military training exercises, prompting Chon Buri police to roll out comprehensive safety and traffic measures.

The troops arrived on four US Navy ships, docking in areas managed by Sattahip and Laem Chabang police stations. Local police were instructed to prioritise traffic flow and collaborate with Pattaya businesses and police to maintain order.
