A tragic accident occurred at a municipal waste sorting centre in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday when a 20 year old worker was killed after falling into a rotating trash compactor.

Police Lieutenant Ketsadawut Meephon from the Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima Police Station received the report at 4.30pm, yesterday, February 10, and proceeded to the scene at the waste management facility in Mueang district, where the incident took place.

Anuwat or Dam was found dead, his body caught in the spiral mechanism of the operating machine. Rescue workers from Sawang Metta Korat arrived with equipment to carefully extract his body. The task was challenging, and the scene was filled with the sorrowful cries of Anuwat’s grieving relatives.

Investigations revealed that Anuwat had been working at the centre for approximately 11 months. His role involved sorting community waste before it was moved to the incinerator system.

It is believed that the accident occurred when he returned from a break to continue his work. Colleagues heard a loud noise and, upon investigation, found that Anuwat had fallen into the machine.

They quickly turned off the switch and informed the head of the workers. It is suspected that he slipped while checking the waste being processed.

The waste management facility has the capacity to handle 230 tonnes of community waste per day, with operations divided into five sections: preliminary waste sorting, anaerobic digestion using biogas, organic composting, production of fuel briquettes from non-biodegradable waste such as plastic, and supplementary systems supporting the main operations, reported KhaoSod.

Currently, the facility processes waste from 34 local administrative organisations, dealing with an average of 500 tonnes of waste daily. This excess waste has led to several hundred thousand tonnes being left untreated and accumulated in open areas.

Last year, a construction worker tragically fell to his death while securing a crane cable at a site in Phitsanulok. The worker, known only as Dam, lost his footing and fell approximately 4 metres, fatally striking his head on a piling.
