Woman tragically mowed down by drunk driver in Samut Prakan
A tragic accident occurred when a drunk driver crashed into a pedestrian on a footpath, killing a woman instantly. The driver, who had been drinking at a birthday party, was apprehended by the police for an alcohol test yesterday, July 1, at 11.30pm.
Police received a report of a fatal accident involving a van and a pedestrian on Sukhabhiban 6 Road in Bang Phli Yai, Samut Prakan. On arrival, they found the van lodged against a tree in front of a house, with the body of 47 year old Thongluan lying nearby. The house and a parked motorcycle were also damaged.
Witnesses described how the van, driven by 36 year old Krit Rodbanjob had veered off course. Krit admitted to having been drinking with friends at a nearby petrol station to celebrate his birthday. When he attempted to drive home, he lost control of the vehicle shortly after leaving the station, claiming he did not initially see anyone and only realised what had happened later.
Residents reported that the victim had recently moved into the area. She was walking on the footpath when the speeding van lost control, mounted the kerb, and struck her. The vehicle stopped only when it hit a tree, preventing it from crashing into the house.
Police detained the drunk driver to question him further and conduct an alcohol test. If his blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limit, he will face severe charges for causing death and property damage while driving under the influence.
Krit claimed the accident might have been due to a steering wheel malfunction or a broken steering rack. However, police are investigating the incident thoroughly, reported Khaosod.
The community expressed their sadness and concern over the incident, emphasising the dangers of drunk driving. Police urged drivers to be responsible and avoid drinking and driving to prevent such tragedies.
