Uncontrolled landfill fire in Prachin Buri threatens nearby homes (video)
A landfill fire in Prachin Buri province remains uncontrolled, sparking concerns it might reach nearby residential areas. The fire ignited yesterday, February 8, at the Tambon Kabin administrative organisation’s landfill in Kabin Buri district.
Five fire engines have attempted to extinguish the flames, but success has been elusive. The fire is engulfing a substantial waste pile exceeding 3 metres in height and is visible from 4 kilometres away.
This landfill spans over 50 rai (80,000 square metres) and is situated approximately 500 metres from a community with five chicken farms.
Natthapong Saengla, a 39 year old chicken farm owner nearby, reported previous impacts from smoke earlier this year, with the first incident occurring in January. He noted that the current smoke volume is increasing, potentially threatening his farm;
“If the smoke enters his chicken coop housing 200,000 birds, it could be fatal for them.”
Concerns have been raised about the unpleasant odours and hazardous PM2.5 levels emanating from the site.
The dry weather has contributed to the difficulty in controlling the fire. Local officials are working with excavators to clear garbage, enhancing the effectiveness of water spraying efforts.
Initially, there was speculation that the fire might have ignited from heat or spread from a nearby wildfire, reported Bangkok Post.
In response to air pollution, the government introduced a no-burn measure last month, with penalties for violators.
In similar news, a fire incident occurred at a second-hand auto parts shop in Nong Hin, Pang Ku subdistrict, Prakhon Chai district, Buriram province. The blaze broke out on February 4 after a man dismantling a car accidentally ignited the vehicle’s fuel tank.
The blaze completely destroyed the car and spread to a pile of spare parts. Police Lieutenant Colonel Udomsak Torphimai from the Prakhon Chai Police Station coordinated with local fire services to extinguish the fire, which took approximately 20 minutes to control.
