Thai woman takes a ‘bridge’ too far: Miraculous survival in plunge

A Thai woman miraculously survived falling off a bridge in the central province of Pathum Thani, though another motorist was injured as a result of her fall. The crash victim told police that the accident occurred after driving home from a party.

Officers from Khlong Luang Police Station were alerted to the accident at 3.30am today, April 10. The incident occurred beneath a U-turn bridge over Phahon Yothin Road in Pathum Thani province. A bluish-gray Honda Civic sedan fell from the bridge and landed on a traffic barrier below.

The bridge stands more than 5 metres above the road surface but the driver, 33 year old Thai woman Yuwathida, fortunately sustained only minor injuries.

Roughly 30 metres from the scene, officers discovered an overturned black Ford Ranger pickup truck. The vehicle had sustained significant damage to its bumper, and the driver, 33 year old Maethee, suffered a head injury.

Yuwathida informed police that she had been driving home after attending a friend’s birthday party in the Thunyaburi area of Pathum Thani. She admitted to driving at high speed as she had work the following morning.

She stated that she could only recall driving onto the U-turn bridge and could not remember what happened thereafter.

Yuwathida revealed that her vehicle was second-hand and that she had bought it only a month earlier. She had registered for car insurance just one day before the incident.

Maethee told officers that he had been driving home when he saw the front of Yuwathida’s sedan protruding into the lane in which he was travelling.

He swerved to avoid a collision with Yuwathida’s car, but his vehicle lost balance, struck a traffic barrier, and overturned.

Yuwathida did not disclose whether she had consumed alcohol at the party, and police did not confirm whether she was subjected to an alcohol test.

In a related incident last May, another Thai man survived a fall from a bridge. Dashcam footage from a car behind the man’s vehicle showed him driving at high speed and attempting to squeeze between a pickup and an SUV ahead.

The SUV then swerved and struck his vehicle, causing it to fall from the bridge. It remains unclear whether the SUV driver acted deliberately or out of panic.
