Drunk-driving anti-corruption official kills delivery rider in Nonthaburi
A deputy spokesperson of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) was caught in a fatal drunk driving crash in Nonthaburi that killed a food delivery rider last night, May 27.
Officers from Bang Sri Mueang Police Station were called to the scene on the Bangrak Noi Overpass on Ratchapruek Road at about 11pm. The body of the victim, identified as 43 year old delivery rider Sornnarin, was found on the left lane of the three-lane road.
Police reported that Sornnarin suffered severe head injuries, and his left leg was severed in the crash. His overturned electric motorcycle was discovered about 300 metres from the body.
At the foot of the overpass, police found a damaged Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck with a punctured tyre. The driver was identified as Jarong, deputy spokesperson of the NACC.
A witness, 36 year old Max, told police he was riding behind the victim and saw the pickup truck travelling in the right lane before suddenly crossing lanes and crashing into the motorcycle. The pickup truck dragged the motorcycle along the road for several metres after the impact.
Max further claimed that Jarong attempted to escape from the scene but was unable to continue driving because the vehicle’s tyre had been punctured in the crash.
Another witness reportedly followed the pickup truck and asked the driver to leave the vehicle. Max alleged that Jarong identified himself as a senior government official and claimed to have connections with senior police officers in Nonthaburi.
Max also accused Jarong, himself a government official, of attempting to have another person take responsibility for the crash. However, Max had video footage of the incident.
Police later escorted Jarong to the station for an alcohol test. Officers said the test showed 189 milligrammes per cent of alcohol in his system, exceeding the legal limit of 50 milligrammes per cent.
As of now, police have not publicly confirmed the charges filed against Jarong. Under the Land Traffic Act, causing death while driving under the influence of alcohol carries penalties ranging from three to 10 years in prison and fines between 60,000 and 200,000 baht.
