Myanmar mystery: Two Chinese nationals vanish near Thai border
The Royal Thai Police (RTP) have launched a high-stakes investigation following the baffling disappearance of two more Chinese nationals near the infamous Thai-Myanmar border.
The missing duo includes a male model and a young woman, their vanishing acts echoing a recent case involving a Chinese actor snared by traffickers.
Inspector-General Thatchai Pitaneelaboot of the RTP is leading the probe, sparked by frantic appeals from the families of the missing. One of the vanished, Chinese model Yang Zeqi, barely touched Thai soil before slipping into the shadows.
His case uncannily mirrors that of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who vanished in the same treacherous area just last week. Wang, who goes by the stage name Xingxing, was later trafficked to a notorious scam centre in Myawaddy. Fortunately, the 31 year old actor was rescued and has safely returned to Thailand.
According to Inspector-General Thatchai, desperate relatives posted pleas on social media, thrusting Yang’s mysterious disappearance into the spotlight. RTP officers wasted no time in launching a thorough investigation.
Yang’s saga began with a seemingly innocent WeChat message. Told he’d aced a movie audition, the model flew into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport on December 20, catching flight VZ 3719 from Beijing.
Arriving at the crack of dawn, he was whisked away in a car and later swapped vehicles, courtesy of a supposed film crew team,—heading straight for the border. His last pangs of emotion surfaced in a message to a friend on December 21, where he confessed to feeling “sad.”
The chilling twist came on December 29, when Yang video-called his mother. Clad in black and visibly bruised, he insisted he was safe, yet ominously ended the call, after which his phone went dead, reported Bangkok Post.
Fearing the worst, Yang’s family swiftly contacted Chinese police and sounded the alarm at Chinese embassies in Thailand and Myanmar.
In a parallel mystery, police are desperately searching for 21 year old Wu Jiaqi. Her father, Wu Weidong, made a heartfelt plea for help to National Police Chief Kitrat Phanphet. Wu Jiaqi landed in Thailand on January 6, but contact with her was abruptly cut off, sparking alarm among her friends and family.
The RTP registered a complaint at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Wednesday, January 8.
Inspector-General Thatchai confirmed that investigators are scouring CCTV footage from the airport and key locations along Wu Jiaqi’s presumed route, chasing down any leads in this tangled web of intrigue.
