Roadside bomb injures six police officers in southern Thailand
A roadside bomb detonated in Pattani yesterday, injuring six police officers and prompting the army to urge motorists to exercise caution. The explosion occurred on Road 42 in Nong Chik district as an armoured pickup truck carrying the officers was returning to base from a checkpoint.
The Internal Security Operations Command’s (ISOC) southern frontline office reported that the blast caused the vehicle to veer off the road and tumble down an embankment, igniting a brush fire in the process. All six injured officers were rushed to Pattani Hospital for treatment. Isoc attributed the attack to insurgents operating in the region.
The explosion was powerful enough to throw the vehicle off the road, said an ISOC spokesperson. We believe this is the work of insurgents.
Road 42 serves as a crucial link between Songkhla and the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala. Following the incident, authorities cordoned off the affected section of the road. Bomb experts were dispatched to examine the scene thoroughly, while travellers were advised to take alternative routes if possible and to remain vigilant.
Travellers should avoid this section of Road 42 if they can and stay alert, an official warned.
The brush fire ignited by the bomb added to the chaos, although it was eventually brought under control. This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Thailand’s southern provinces, where insurgent activity remains a persistent threat.
Thai officials increased security measures in the area and are conducting a thorough investigation to prevent further attacks. The local community has been urged to report any suspicious activities to help maintain safety on Road 42 and surrounding areas.
We are doing everything we can to secure the area and find those responsible, said a security official.
The incident has once again highlighted the volatile situation in Thailand’s Deep South, where insurgents frequently target security forces and civilians. The government continues to work on both immediate security measures and long-term solutions to address the root causes of the conflict.
Motorists and residents alike are reminded to stay informed about the latest security updates and to cooperate with authorities to ensure their safety as they navigate the region, reported Bangkok Post.
