Fisherman discovers body in tragic canal drowning accident
A fishing trip along an irrigation canal quickly took a tragic turn when a local fisherman discovered the floating corpse of a man who had been missing since the previous night after taking a quick dip in the canal, citing excessive heat.
The incident occurred yesterday when Police Lieutenant Nutthaphat Chan-narong from the Amphawa Police Station received a report of a bloated body found in the Khlong Chonprathan canal in Amphawa District, Samut Songkhram.
A medical examiner from Amphawa Hospital alongside rescue personnel from Sawang Benjatham Samut Songkhram Foundation were also present on the scene.
The body was identified as 40 year old Surin native, Tevarit. He was found floating face down in the water by the fisherman and was estimated to have been dead for about one day. There were no visible wounds on his body.
His older brother, 47 year old Wichan recounted that the previous night Tevarit had returned from work and joined them for drinks at their house near the canal. Tevarit complained about the heat and went down to the canal to cool off but did not return.
His companions assumed he had gone back home until a neighbour fishing by the canal later discovered his body.
Wichan further reveals that his brother had a history of epilepsy and often experienced seizures, especially after heavy drinking. He had been hospitalised numerous times due to his condition
Preliminary investigations suggest that Tevarit may have had a seizure while bathing in the canal, leading to his drowning. Authorities have handed over the body to the family for religious rites and will continue to investigate the exact cause of death, reported Khaosod.
