A 60 year old woman driving a Toyota Fortuner fatally hit a disabled man crossing the road. Shocked, she fled the scene before reporting to the local police station. The hit-and-run incident reportedly occurred in a dark area with tall grass obstructing visibility around 9.15pm yesterday.

The hit-and-run incident took place in a school zone, marked with warning signs and pedestrian lanes. The victim, 62 year old Somchai (surname withheld), was a disabled individual (missing his left leg).

He sustained broken limbs and severe head injuries, resulting in his death. Besides his two crutches, a bag was found near his body. Fragments of the car that hit him were scattered at the scene.

Somchai’s younger brother, Boonchom, explained that the victim lived alone on the opposite side of the road and would regularly cross over to his shop. The brother suspected that the tall grass, over two metres high, along the road median might have obstructed the driver’s view.

Additionally, the area lacked proper street lighting. He also revealed that Somchai’s disability was a result of a previous road accident, which led to the amputation of his left leg, reported KhaoSod.

While the police were investigating the hit-and-run scene, the driver, 60 year old Patraporn (surname withheld), and her husband arrived at the Ban Tha Luen Police Station, approximately 14 kilometres from the accident site.

Patraporn stated that she and her husband were returning from downtown Trat to Klong Yai. She was driving at a moderate speed when they approached the accident site, which was poorly lit and had tall grass in the median strip.

Unable to stop in time when Somchai crossed the road, she hit him. Overcome with fear, she didn’t stop at the scene but instead called her brother who advised her to report to the Ban Tha Luen Police Station.
