Ukrainian man seeks blood donation after accident in Phuket

A Ukrainian man critically injured in a pickup crash in Phuket is seeking blood donations after his family said O-negative blood is in short supply in Thailand.

The crash was reported on a road in Chalong, Phuket, on March 25. CCTV footage shared on Thai social media showed a blue pickup truck hitting two motorcycles before crashing into an electricity pole.

Police said the pickup was driven by a foreign woman, whose identity has not been disclosed. One Thai motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while another rider suffered serious injuries.

At the time of the incident, the identity of the injured motorcyclist was not released publicly, and details of legal proceedings involving the foreign pickup driver were also not disclosed.

In an update posted today, April 1, by the Phuket Times Facebook page, the injured rider was identified as Ukrainian national Gert Daniel Geers. He remains in critical condition and is being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

According to the report, Geers’ sister appealed to an online community for help, saying he urgently needs O-negative blood. She said donations can be made at Bangkok Hospital Phuket or at Red Cross Blood Centre locations nationwide.

The Red Cross Blood Centre has also stated that foreigners can donate blood in Thailand if they meet the centre’s requirements.

Under the criteria cited, foreign blood donors must have a clear address in Thailand that can be contacted for at least two months after the donation. Donors must also have stayed in Thailand for at least three months before donating, to help ensure they do not have infectious diseases that can be transmitted through blood.

In addition, donors and their family members must not have any history of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD). Further details on eligibility for foreign donors are available via the Thai Red Cross website.
