Rubbish accumulation shock: Chiang Mai condo unveils year-long neglect
A year-long accumulation of rubbish in a Chiang Mai condominium sparked concern among other tenants when it led to a water leak. The tenant, a 40 year old postal worker, had been absent for a year, leaving behind a room filled with waste at a lodging on Mahidol Road, Nong Hoi, Mueang District, Chiang Mai.
The issue came to light when water flooded from room 307 into other condos, causing discomfort for other residents.
The condo’s caretaker, June, guided reporters to the third floor, room 307. The tenant had been renting the room for around four to five years, paying a stable rent of 1,700 baht per month, plus 200 baht for electricity. Despite paying late charges occasionally, he was consistent in his payments, which led June to have no suspicions about him.
At around 4 to 5am, water started leaking from room 307, seeping into other apartments. On inspection, June found the room was submerged in rubbish accumulation and a significant water leak from the bathroom. A locksmith was called to unlock the room, revealing a shocking sight.
Rubbish was piled high and a broken tap in the bathroom was found, which had been plugged with cloth for a long time. As the cloth came loose, the water started flowing continuously.
Upon contacting the tenant, he agreed to compensate for the damage but requested to do so at the end of the month. The condo’s owner, a senior lady, told reporters that the tenant had been a regular payer, occasionally paying late fees. She had not anticipated such an incident, reported KhaoSod.
“The room was in a very messy condition, indicating that it had been neglected for a long time. He locked the room well and didn’t return for a year.
“We don’t know why he left the room in this state. He lives alone. When he promised to clear it by the end of the month, we decided to maintain the room in its current condition until his arrival and then proceed with cleaning. We will keep the room closed to prevent the rubbish’s smell from escaping.”
