BMW takes wrong turn: Car-napped and pawned in joyride mix-up
A BMW was taken for a ride without permission and ended up severely damaged after being pawned at a well-known garage in Nonthaburi. The owner of the garage refused to pay for repairs, suggesting that the car owner should seek damages from the employee responsible.
Yesterday, November 24, at the Bang Bua Thong Police Station in Nonthaburi, 55 year old Prawet, filed a report with the police, explaining that he had pawned his car at a garage in Bang Bua Thong for 40,000 baht with a 10% monthly interest rate.
The car was then moved to another garage in Sai Noi, where an employee took it out for several unauthorised drives, eventually leading to a serious accident. The damages to the BMW were appraised at 570,000 baht, but the insurance only covered 200,000 baht, leaving a gap of nearly 400,000 baht, which the garage declined to cover.
Prawet recounted previously spotting his pawned vehicle parked at the roadside near the Five Junction in Pak Kret without a rear license plate. Upon inquiring, the garage owner admitted that an employee had taken the car out for a spin and assured Prawet that they would be warned not to do so again.
However, Prawet continued to see the car being driven around without a license plate until the accident occurred.
Despite this suggestion, Prawet believes that the garage should bear some responsibility as well. He stated that if the garage owner continues to refuse accountability, he intends to pursue legal action to claim compensation for the damages incurred, reported KhaoSod.
The incident not only affects Prawet financially, but it also brings to light the potential legal implications for businesses if they fail to monitor their employees’ actions adequately.
