Thai couple accuses ex-employee of stealing 5 million baht in cash and gold
A Thai couple suspected their ex-employee of stealing cash and gold accessories worth over 5 million baht from their home in the northern province of Lampang.
The couple, whose identities have not been disclosed, filed a complaint with Kelang Nakhon Police Station after discovering the theft. Their home, located in Mueang Lampang district, also operates as a second-hand auto parts store.
The incident occurred on November 19 while the couple were away for work in Chiang Rai province. They discovered the theft upon returning home on November 20. All their cabinets had been rummaged through, but the thief managed to avoid detection by the 20 security cameras installed in the house.
The stolen items included gold necklaces, gold rings, a gold bracelet, and cash. Documents were found scattered across the floor.
The couple told Channel 7 that they suspect the thief entered their home through the back door. Their house is adjacent to a crematorium, and they believe the thief accessed their property via that route.
Given the thief’s ability to evade the security cameras and their apparent knowledge of where the valuables were kept, the couple suspect their former employee who had a close relationship with them before .
The couple shared their story with the media, hoping to urge the police to act swiftly. They expressed their devastation, stating that the stolen items had both monetary and sentimental value, as they were family heirlooms passed down through generations.
In a related incident earlier this month, a maid at a gold shop in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen was reported to have stolen gold on 47 occasions, amounting to a total value of over 20 million baht.
Another gold theft was reported in August when a gold shop worker stole 24 million baht worth of gold from a shop in Nonthaburi.
The suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he had been working at the shop for more than 10 years but had not received a salary increase despite requesting one. As a result, he began stealing gold accessories to sell and use the money for his daily expenses.
