Bangkok hospital evacuates patients after Myanmar earthquake tremors (video)

Hospital beds were set up in a sports hall in Bangkok as patients were evacuated from Rajavithi Hospital due to concerns over damage from a powerful earthquake.

The 7.7-magnitude quake struck central Myanmar on March 28, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock, causing tremors to be felt as far as Bangkok, located over 1,000 kilometres away.

Patients at Rajavithi Hospital were promptly moved to nearby temporary shelters, including the hospital’s canteen and sports hall. Myanmar experienced the most severe impact, with the military government reporting at least 1,002 fatalities and nearly 2,400 injuries.

In Bangkok, approximately 10 deaths were confirmed, with the lunchtime tremors causing widespread panic.

The construction site of a new government building was quickly evacuated, with people fleeing by car or on foot. Video footage captured the tremors shaking a high-rise hotel, sending water from its rooftop pool cascading over the edge.

Hospital staff swiftly moved patients outside. A leukaemia patient, who declined to be named, recounted being moved from a private room to a hall, with nurses assisting her down multiple flights of stairs.

She expressed concern about receiving her blood platelet treatment, stating that the hospital was coordinating with other facilities to continue her care.

Some patients were returned inside, while others were relocated to different hospitals. Yesterday, about 30 patients remained in the sports hall, receiving basic medical care such as blood transfusions.

The tremors left many Bangkok residents fearful of aftershocks, with some opting to sleep outdoors in parks or under trees.

In response, volunteers, including actress Panadda Wongphudee, provided refreshments to support rescue workers in their effort, reported Bangkok Post.

In similar news, a tremor in Pathum Thani province, triggered by an earthquake, was strongly felt in high-rise buildings, including the 18-storey medical centre at Pathum Thani Hospital.

In response, hospital management, medical teams, and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and Poh Teck Tung Foundation swiftly evacuated over 100 people, including ICU patients and staff.
