Storm alert: Heavy rain to lash Bangkok and 46 other provinces

Thailand is bracing for another round of wild weather as the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issues its eighth summer storm warning.

Forecasters predict heavy downpours will batter 47 provinces, with Bangkok and the northeast set to take a major hit. Up to 60% of the capital is expected to be drenched as the storm rolls in.

The TMD is urging residents to stay alert for flash floods, strong winds, and potential damage. Stay tuned for further updates as the storm approaches.

The warning, effective from yesterday, March 29, predicts thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and lightning due to a moderate cold air mass from China, which is expected to cover the northeast of Thailand and the South China Sea.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor areas, large trees, unstable structures, and billboards during the storm. Farmers are encouraged to strengthen their crops and livestock protection and maintain their health during the weather changes.

The previous warning mentioned similar weather conditions, with eastern and northeastern winds affecting the Gulf of Thailand, the south, and the Andaman Sea. This is expected to bring thunderstorms, especially in southern areas, with waves reaching over 2 metres in stormy conditions.

From March 31 to April 3, an easterly wind wave is predicted to move through the east, Gulf of Thailand, and the south, causing increased rainfall and some severe weather, including strong winds. Dust and haze accumulation in upper Thailand is expected to decrease due to stronger winds.

For the weather forecast from 6pm today until 6pm tomorrow: The north will experience hot to very hot weather with a the 20% chance of thunderstorms.

The northeast will see hot weather with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, especially in provinces like Loei, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen. The central region, including Nakhon Sawan and Ayutthaya, has a 40% chance of thunderstorms.

Weather forecast

The east, including Chon Buri and Rayong, faces a 60% chance of thunderstorms with strong winds and hail. The east coast of the south, including Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla, has a 20% chance of thunderstorms.

The west coast of the south, covering Krabi and Trang, also has a 20% chance of thunderstorms. Bangkok and surrounding areas are predicted to be hot, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms.

The eighth warning issued at 5pm yesterday, March 29, highlights potential summer storms in upper Thailand from March 29 to April 1. A cold air mass from China will bring easterly and southeasterly winds covering the region, bringing moisture and leading to thunderstorms.

Residents in these areas should be cautious of the potential dangers of the storms. Farmers are advised to take protective measures to safeguard their crops and livestock.

The affected provinces yesterday, March 29, included Phichit and Phetchabun in the north and Nong Khai and Udon Thani in the northeast. Today, March 30, the affected provinces will expand to include Tak and Sukhothai in the north and Chaiyaphum and Khon Kaen in the northeast.

From March 31 to April 1, Chiang Mai and Lampang in the north and Uthai Thani and Kanchanaburi in the central region will also be affected, reported KhaoSod.

The public is urged to follow updates from the TMD for the latest information. The next announcement is expected on March 30 at 5am.
