7 dead and 1 injury reported in Ang Thong pickup collision
A fatal pickup collision occurred on a road in the central province of Ang Thong yesterday, January 29, leaving seven people dead and one seriously injured.
Officers from Pa Mok Police Station, along with medical professionals from Pa Mok Hospital and rescue workers, rushed to the accident scene on the Ang Thong-Ayutthaya Road at 2.15pm after being notified by a witness. Two damaged pickup trucks were found at the scene: a silver-bronze Ford pickup and a white Isuzu pickup.
According to the witness, the driver of the Ford pickup lost control of the vehicle and veered across the central reservation into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with the Isuzu pickup. Both vehicles sustained severe damage to their fronts.
The driver and two passengers in the Ford pickup were reported to be food vendors on their way to a market to set up their stalls. The three victims were identified as:
- Punyisa Tirapanyamaethee, 49 year old female driver
- Suthida Thani, 60 year old female passenger
- Papatsawan Iam-Wijarn, 56 year old female passenger
All three died at the scene.
The Isuzu pickup was carrying five people, including the driver. They were identified as:
- Sarawut Pankaew, 33 year old male driver
- Apinya Pankaew, 7 year old female passenger
- Chatchawan Piachuad, 57 year old male passenger
- Uma Piachuad, 56 year old female passenger
- Wilawan Piachuad, 31 year old female passenger
Wilawan was the sole survivor but suffered serious injuries. She is currently receiving treatment at Ang Thong Hospital.
This tragic accident follows several similar incidents this month. On January 19, a drowsy pickup driver crashed into a motorcycle before colliding with a roadside barrier in Chon Buri province. A Thai man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene, while another woman suffered a broken leg. The pickup driver was unharmed.
Earlier this month, a Thai motorcyclist lost his life in Ayutthaya province after riding against the traffic flow and crashing into a pickup.
In another incident the same month, seven people, including two year old twins, were killed in a pickup accident in Surat Thani province. The driver was suspected of falling asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to crash into a roadside tree.
