Monopoly: Chiang Mai Edition being planned for next year
Coming off the success of the Phuket Edition that was released in March, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced the launch of Monopoly: Chiang Mai Edition. The new edition celebrating the northern city is scheduled to be released sometime next year.
The perennial board game favourite has launched over 300 versions and thousands of custom editions ranging from Disney Villains to Bass Fishing to One Direction (the band, not because all players go in the same direction in the game) since its inception in 1935. Now, with the permission of Monopoly owners Hasbro, the TAT has partnered with Winning Moves UK to create the Chiang Mai Edition.
The game will replace the standard streets and special squares of the Monopoly board with famous Chiang Mai businesses and attractions, historical landmarks, and cultural sites. The bonus Community Chest and Chance cards will include custom stories about Chiang Mai for players to learn about that city.
TAT governor Yuttasak Supasorn announced the game as an exciting promotion of all that Chiang Mai has to offer.
“We very much look forward to launching the Monopoly: Chiang Mai Edition, as the second game in the Thailand series and which is coming at a time when international travel is returning to Thailand. Like the Phuket game, it is also sure to prove a favourite with players of all ages, both tourists and locals, with plenty of Chiang Mai’s culture, charm, and history to be discovered.”
Winning Moves UK will also work with the TAT to produce a Chiang Mai-themed version of the card game Top Trumps, in the same vein as the custom Monopoly game highlighting the city’s top attractions.
The details of both games have not been finalised and fans of Chiang Mai as well as residents are invited to share their input. Anyone who would like to suggest locations for the Monopoly or Top Trumps can submit their ideas through the Chiang Mai Monopoly Facebook page or by emailing ChiangMai@winningmoves.co.uk.
