Thailand tragedy: English football fan’s holiday ends in heartbreak

A beloved English football fan tragically died from a drug overdose while holidaying in Thailand, an inquest revealed yesterday.

Connor Abbott from Thirsk, in the North-East of England, was found dead in his Bangkok hotel room on September 22, last year. The inquest at North Yorkshire Coroner’s Court cited morphine toxicity as the cause of death.

A heartfelt GoFundMe page described the 22 year old York City supporter as a “beloved son, brother, and a dear friend to countless people,” highlighting his “passion for entertaining those around him” and recalling his “infectious energy and joy.”

“He was more than a friend – he was a source of laughter, happiness, and unforgettable memories to everyone who knew him,” the tribute added.

In memory of Connor, York City fans held a minute’s applause in the 23rd minute of their match against Eastleigh on September 28.

York manager Adam Hinshelwood expressed, “As a football club, we send all of our condolences to Connor’s family. It’s a sad time, and we’re doing all we can to show respect.”

Minstermen co-chairman Matt Uggla called it “absolutely awful news.”

“My thoughts are with his family and friends.”

SC Block Reds, a supporters group instrumental in arranging the tribute.

“SC Block are sad to hear that fellow South Stander Connor Abbott passed away aged 23. Home and away, we’ve shared many laughs over the years.

“Condolences to his family and close friends. Rest in peace, Connor.”

No other details surrounding Abbott’s death were revealed his family or the senior coroner Jon Heath.

Heath has postponed the inquest, with a new date yet to be set, reported The Northern Echo.
