Thailand weather update: Cold north, stormy south and rain in 19 provinces

Today’s weather in Thailand sees a mix of cold in the north, stormy conditions in the south, and a forecast of rainfall across 19 provinces, including the capital city, Bangkok, and its surrounding regions.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department‘s 24-hour forecast, high atmospheric pressure or mass cold air covers the northeastern regions and the South China Sea. This, combined with an easterly wind, has resulted in foggy conditions in the upper part of the country during the morning hours.

In the eastern and lower central regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity, there are instances of rainfall. The northern and northeastern regions continue to experience cold mornings. Meanwhile, a westward wind current is moving to cover the upper northern region, resulting in isolated thundershowers and a temperature drop of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. Residents in these upper areas are advised to take care of their health due to the changing weather conditions and to exercise caution when travelling through foggy areas.

The prevailing northeastern monsoon is covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region, resulting in heavy rain in some areas of the lower south. The lower Gulf of Thailand is experiencing wave heights of 1 to 2 metres, and in areas with thundershowers, the waves can reach over 2 metres.

At this time, lower northern, northeastern, central, including Bangkok and its vicinity, and eastern regions are likely to have accumulated dust particles/smog, ranging from moderate to high levels, due to weak winds.

The weather forecast for Thailand from 6am today until 6am tomorrow indicates that the northern region will experience cold weather and morning fog. Temperatures are predicted to decrease by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, primarily in the upper areas where there are 10% chances of thundershowers.

Most of these areas include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai provinces. The lowest temperatures are expected to be between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperatures ranging from 32 to 36 degrees Celsius.

The mountaintops are expected to be cold, with the minimum temperature ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. An easterly wind is expected to blow at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.

In the northeastern region, the weather is expected to be cold with some morning fog. The lowest temperatures in these regions are forecasted to be between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperatures between 33 and 34 degrees Celsius.

The hilltops are expected to be cold to very cold, with the minimum temperature ranging between 13 and 17 degrees Celsius. An easterly wind is expected to blow at 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.

In the central region, morning fog is expected with light rainfall in a few areas. The lowest temperatures will range between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperatures between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. An easterly wind is expected to blow at 10 to 15 kilometres per hour.

In the eastern region, there will be some morning fog with a 10% chance of rainfall in most areas, including Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, and Rayong provinces. The lowest temperatures will range between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, and the highest temperatures will range between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. A southeast wind is expected to blow at 10- to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea waves are expected to be less than 1 metre high.

Thunderstorms

In the south (east coast), there will be thunderstorms with a 60% chance of rainfall and heavy rain in some areas, mainly in Pattalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. The lowest temperatures will range between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius, and the highest temperatures will range between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. From Surat Thani upwards, an easterly wind is expected to blow at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour.

The sea waves will be about 1 metre high, and in thunderstorm areas, the waves can be over 2 metres high. From Nakhon Si Thammarat downwards, an easterly wind is expected to blow at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. In the south (west coast), there will be thunderstorms with a 40% chance of rainfall mainly in Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun provinces. An easterly wind is expected to blow at 10 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea waves will be less than 1 metre high, and in thunderstorm areas, the waves can be over 1 metre high.
