Thailand braces for heavy rain and flash floods across 46 provinces

Officials monitor eastern provinces as rainfall intensifies

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather advisory, warning of increased rainfall across Thailand, with some areas, particularly in the east, expected to experience heavy rain. A total of 46 provinces are cautioned about potential flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides, including Bangkok, which is predicted to have a 60% chance of rain today, June 22.

The increased rainfall is attributed to a moderate southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, alongside a monsoon trough passing over the upper north and Laos, leading to a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam.

The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will experience moderate winds, with wave heights reaching approximately 2 metres in the upper Andaman Sea and 1 to 2 metres in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand. In areas with thunderstorms, waves could exceed 2 metres, prompting caution for seafarers in these regions.

In the north, thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to 31 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

The northeast will also see thunderstorms in 70% of the area with heavy rain in some regions, such as Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Temperatures will range from 22 to 26°C to 32 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
