Thailand braces for floods and heavy rains amid monsoon trough

Flash floods and high waves threaten multiple regions nationwide

Heavy rain and rough seas are expected across Thailand as a monsoon system moves in, prompting warnings for residents and travellers to stay alert.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned that residents in affected areas should be cautious of heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash floods and overflows, particularly along foothills, near waterways, and in low-lying areas.

The wet weather is expected to be most intense in provinces like Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, with Bangkok not escaping the deluge.

Meanwhile, the seas are set to turn choppy. In the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand, waves are forecast to reach 2 metres, surging higher during thunderstorms. The lower Andaman is expected to see waves of 1 to 2 metres, also rising above 2 metres during storms.

The TMD advised all ships to proceed with caution and avoid areas with thundershowers, urging both fishermen and tourists to remain vigilant.

The tropical storm Mitag, which had been hovering over Guangdong, China, has now weakened to a tropical depression and is expected to dissipate quickly. However, travellers are still advised to check local forecasts before setting out.
