Severe weather alert: Summer storms hit 69 Thai provinces

Unstable climate patterns spark fears of flash floods and property damage

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings for severe weather, including summer storms, across 69 provinces. Expect heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and possible thunderstorms. Southern Thailand will see increased rainfall, while Bangkok faces an 80% chance of precipitation.

According to the TMD’s 24-hour forecast from today, May 11, upper Thailand is set to experience summer storms characterised by thunderstorms, strong winds, and potential hail. Some areas may also encounter heavy rain and lightning.

This is attributed to a moderate high-pressure system from China impacting Vietnam and the South China Sea. Consequently, southeastern and southern winds are bringing moisture from the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea over upper Thailand, where some regions remain hot, particularly in the north and central areas.

Residents in these regions are urged to exercise caution, avoid travelling during thunderstorms, and not remain in open spaces, under large trees, or near unstable structures and billboards. Farmers should reinforce crops against potential damage from the storms and prepare to protect agricultural produce and livestock.

In the south, an increase in rainfall is expected, with some areas experiencing heavy rain. Residents should be cautious of heavy and accumulated rainfall which may lead to flash floods and forest runoffs, especially in foothill areas and low-lying regions.

The strengthening western and southwesterly winds are affecting the Andaman Sea, the south, and the Gulf of Thailand, causing moderate conditions with waves reaching 1 to 2 metres, and over 2 metres in stormy areas. Mariners in the Gulf and Andaman Sea should navigate carefully and avoid areas with thunderstorms.
