Seasonal deluge: Heavy downpours continue to drench Thailand

Bangkok will see thunderstorms in 70% of the area, temperatures reaching 35°C

Heavy rainfall is predicted for 70% of areas across north, northeast, and East Thailand today, with 41 provinces facing heavy downpours and severe weather conditions. Flash floods are anticipated, including in Bangkok, as a strong monsoon trough affects the region.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) indicates that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the upper north, upper northeast, and eastern parts of Thailand over the next 24 hours. Residents in these areas, particularly in provinces mentioned in regional reports, should exercise caution.

The accumulated rainfall could lead to flash floods and forest runoffs, especially in hilly terrains, near waterways, and low-lying regions. This is attributed to the potent monsoon trough passing through the upper parts of the north and northeast, along with a low-pressure cell in the upper northeast.

Additionally, a moderate southwest monsoon continues to prevail over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

Moderate wind and waves are forecast for the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach about 2 metres, while in the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf, they will range between 1 and 2 metres. In stormy areas, waves may exceed 2 metres. Mariners in these regions should navigate with caution and avoid sailing in stormy conditions.

In North Thailand, thunderstorms will affect 70% of the area with heavy to very heavy rain in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 24-25°C to 30-35°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-20 km/h.

In the northeast, similar weather patterns will occur, with thunderstorms covering 70% of the area. Provinces such as Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani will experience heavy to very heavy rain.

Temperatures will be between 23-25°C and 28-33°C, with southwesterly winds at 10-20 km/h.
