Heavy rains and flash floods to hit 31 Thai provinces tomorrow
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning that heavy rains will hit 31 provinces, with two regions expected to be particularly affected. The forecast predicts that 70% of the areas in these regions will experience significant rainfall, and the public is advised to be cautious of potential dangers such as flash floods and forest runoff.
The TMD’s 24-hour forecast, starting at 6pm today, August 7, indicates that the southwestern monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Additionally, a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam is contributing to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in northern, eastern, and southern Thailand.
Residents in these areas should be vigilant against heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could lead to flash floods and rapid water flow, especially in low-lying regions and areas near watercourses. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation specifically advised 10 provinces, including Bangkok, to closely monitor the Chao Phraya River’s water levels from August 8 onwards.
The monsoon’s impact is expected to bring heavy rain to 34 provinces, including Bangkok, with 70% of the areas experiencing significant rainfall.
In the upper Andaman Sea, particularly from Ranong province upwards, waves are expected to reach 1 to 2 metres and over 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid navigating through stormy areas during this period.
For the northern region, the forecast predicts thunderstorms covering 70% of the area with some heavy rainfall in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, and Phetchabun provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26 degrees Celsius at night to 34 to 36 degrees Celsius during the day, with southwesterly winds blowing at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
