Rain check: Southern Thailand braced for monsoon-soaked splash
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for 10 provinces in southern Thailand, alerting residents of potentially heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system and monsoon conditions affecting the region today and tomorrow.
Sukanyanee Yawincharn, TMD Director General, released the sixth announcement concerning the heavy rainfall expected in southern Thailand. The warning, which is effective from today through tomorrow, highlights the impact of a low-pressure system moving from the lower South China Sea through the southern region of Thailand, Malaysia, into the lower Andaman Sea, and the Strait of Malacca.
Additionally, a moderately strong northeast monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region is contributing to the anticipated weather conditions.
This weather pattern is expected to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas of southern Thailand. Residents in these regions are urged to be vigilant of the dangers associated with severe rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which could result in flash floods, forest runoffs, and overflowing of banks. Areas particularly at risk include those near foothills, watercourses, and low-lying regions.
Today, December 4, the provinces anticipated to experience heavy rainfall are Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. Tomorrow, the same provinces, excluding Surat Thani, are expected to continue facing heavy rain.
The sea conditions in the lower Gulf of Thailand are moderately strong with waves approximately 2 metres high, increasing beyond 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms. The upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves ranging from 1 to 2 metres, and the Andaman Sea will experience waves around 1 metre high, also exceeding 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas experiencing thunderstorms, reported KhaoSod.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following announcements from the TMD, which are accessible on their official website or through their 24-hour hotline. The department released this announcement today at 5am and will issue the next update at 5pm.
