TMD urges caution as flood risks rise

Get your brollies out, folks, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is sounding the alarm today, predicting relentless downpours across 29 provinces. Yes, that includes Bangkok! Brace yourselves, as about 40% of the city could face a serious soaking.

Residents are advised to be cautious of potential flash floods, forest runoffs, and landslides, especially in mountainous regions and low-lying areas.

The current weather conditions are attributed to a moderate southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Additionally, low-pressure areas are situated over northern Laos and Vietnam.

The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are experiencing moderate winds, with waves in the upper Andaman Sea reaching approximately 2 metres. Meanwhile, waves in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are between 1 and 2 metres.

In areas with thunderstorms, waves may exceed 2 metres. Mariners in these regions are urged to navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.

In northern Thailand, thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rain predicted in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, and Tak provinces. Temperatures will range from 24°C to 35°C, with southwest winds blowing at speeds of 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

In the northeastern region, 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, with heavy rain expected in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom provinces. Temperatures are expected to be between 23°C and 35°C, with southwest winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

Central Thailand will see thunderstorms in 40% of the area, mainly in Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi provinces. Temperatures will range from 25°C to 35°C, with southwest winds at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

In eastern Thailand, 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces. Temperatures will range from 24°C to 34°C, with southwest winds blowing at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. Sea waves are expected to be 1 to 2 metres high, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms will affect 60% of the area, with heavy rain forecasted in Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Temperatures will be between 23°C and 34°C, with southwest winds at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. Sea conditions include waves around 1 metre high, rising to 1 to 2 metres offshore and above 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms.

For the southern region (western coast), 70% of the area will experience thunderstorms with heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket. Temperatures will range from 21°C to 33°C.

From Phuket northwards, southwest winds will blow at 20 to 35 kilometres per hour, and waves are around 2 metres high, increasing in thunderstorm areas. From Krabi southwards, southwest winds are at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour, with waves between 1 and 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.

Bangkok and its surrounding areas will face thunderstorms in 40% of the area, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 35°C. Southwest winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.
