Bikinis, booty and backlash: Saucy Songkran stirs splash of outrage
Bum-shaking, boob-taping and beachside booty Songkran shows in Bangsaen and Nakhon Ratchasima has exploded into an online firestorm, with Thai police now investigating viral clips of scantily-clad influencers and topless dancers accused of going way too far.
Songkran’s wet and wild reputation may have just crossed the line and now police are considering indecency charges after viral videos showed an influencer baring her bum in Bangsaen and a topless transgender dancer whipping up controversy in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Yesterday, April 15, a reporter highlighted two viral clips posted by a Facebook user showing scenes from Bangsaen Beach, Saensuk subdistrict, Chon Buri, where a well-known local cosmetics influencer made waves with her revealing Songkran attire and risqué dance moves.
The first clip, dated April 13, shows the young woman wearing a white bikini and sheer pink lace dress, playfully dancing while wielding a water gun, reported Amarin TV.
The second clip, from April 14, upped the ante, the woman is seen in a black bikini bottom with no bra, just nipple covers, energetically dancing and repeatedly flaunting her behind to cheering onlookers.
The footage sparked mixed reactions online.
“She’s stunning and confident.”
Others slammed the display as inappropriate.
“Why does she have to show so much? Is this the kind of example we’re setting for kids?”
Officers at Saen Suk Police Station say they are now reviewing the videos to determine whether the actions violate public obscenity laws.
The influencer, known for her online cosmetic sales, is a familiar face in the Bangsaen scene but she could soon be facing legal heat rather than just Internet fame.
Meanwhile, over in Nakhon Ratchasima, the final day of Songkran yesterday saw a similar outcry after a transgender woman was filmed dancing provocatively before exposing her chest to a crowd of mostly male revellers.
The now-viral video, posted by Facebook page กลุ่มข่าวคนโคราชบ้านเอ็ง, shows men touching her and even resting their heads on her chest during the rowdy street party.
The scene took place at the bustling Tek Ha intersection on Pho Klang Road, where hundreds gathered to celebrate by riding in pickup trucks, blasting music, and dancing in the streets, resulting in full-blown traffic chaos.
Critics have accused the dancer of disrespecting Thai cultural values, and authorities are reportedly looking into whether any action should be taken.
As the debate rages online, one thing’s clear: this year’s Songkran celebrations haven’t just made a splash, they’ve caused a storm.
