Teenagers criticised for disrespecting Luang Phor To statue during Songkran

Two teenagers sparked controversy after a video of them dancing and touching the head and face of a revered Luang Phor To statue circulated online.
The incident, which occurred during the Songkran festival yesterday, April 15, has drawn significant criticism on social media, with many questioning the appropriateness of their actions.
The video, capturing the teenagers’ disrespectful behaviour beside a significant Buddhist monk statue, was shared widely, prompting a wave of negative feedback. A member of the News for Rangsit Residents group shared the video, questioning, “Are these actions appropriate?” This post led to numerous comments condemning the teenagers’ actions.
The shared video and subsequent discussions highlight a broader concern about respect and cultural sensitivity, especially during important cultural festivals. Many users have expressed dismay over the teenagers’ apparent disregard for cultural norms and respect for religious symbols.
As the clip continues to circulate, it serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural awareness and respect for traditions, particularly during significant events like Songkran.
The incident has prompted discussions about the role of social media in shaping public perceptions and the responsibility people must uphold in respecting cultural and religious sentiments, reported KhaoSod.
A reporter visiting a Songkran celebration found the event bustling with attendees enjoying the traditional water festivities. Music played as crowds danced joyfully. At the venue, five statues of revered monks, including Luang Phor Toh, were displayed at the back of the area for people to pour water over and apply powder as a blessing for the Thai New Year.
However, controversy emerged after a video clip surfaced showing young men dancing and touching the head of the Luang Phor Toh statue inappropriately. When asked about the video, a group of teenagers at the event expressed discomfort and sadness, saying the act was highly inappropriate.
Adults attending the festival echoed similar sentiments after seeing the footage. Many said the behaviour was deeply disrespectful and should not be emulated by young people.
They added that such actions tarnish the image of religion and degrade the sacred purpose of the statues, which are meant for paying respects and seeking blessings, not for inappropriate conduct, reported Thairath.
