Drunk police officer kills mother and child in Narathiwat crash

A police officer driving under the influence collided with a motorcycle carrying a family of three, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her child, while the father was injured. The officer’s blood alcohol content was found to be 177 milligrammes per cent, significantly above the legal limit.
Yesterday, April 8, Police Colonel Suphachai Yiwangkon, the superintendent of Rangae Police Station, addressed the incident, vowing to ensure a transparent and fair legal process.
The accident occurred in Rangae district, Narathiwat province, on April 7 at approximately 8.12pm, resulting in two fatalities and one serious injury. The perpetrator was identified as Police Sergeant Anucha, a subordinate of Pol. Col. Suphachai, and a member of the same police unit.
Pol. Col. Suphachai assured the public that, following the accident, an immediate alcohol test was conducted on Sergeant Anucha by a doctor using forensic procedures.
The level of alcohol detected was 177 milligrammes per cent, which is significantly over the legal threshold. He emphasised his commitment to impartiality in handling the case, regardless of the offender’s position as a police officer.
He reiterated that all police officers are subject to the same legal standards as the public. In this case, investigators have been instructed to adhere strictly to evidence, ensuring transparency and fairness for all parties.

As the head of the unit, he expressed deep condolences to the bereaved and injured families and pledged full cooperation in the judicial process. The Rangae Police Station will not shield any wrongdoer, irrespective of their identity.
The verse Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un – “Surely, we belong to Allah and verily to Him do we return” – was recited, extending condolences and respect to the family of the deceased. Pol. Col. Suphachai, along with Deputy Superintendent Vithi Chuaysen and community relations officers, participated in the funeral prayers and burial of the victims.
They met with the victims’ relatives to provide initial understanding and express sincere sympathies and provided personal financial assistance of 10,000 baht (US$290) at the Tanyongmas Mosque.
The incident occurred on April 7 at around 8.12pm, with Lieutenant Colonel Panyarat Pongchinrit of Rangae Police Station receiving the report of the crash involving a Honda City, bearing license plate งค 9397 from Songkhla, and a black Yamaha Filano motorcycle.
The collision, which happened at a U-turn on Road 4055 in Tanyongmas subdistrict, resulted in the deaths of 22 year old Nurhafiza Chemae and three year old Muhammadshamil Awe. The injured, identified as 23 year old Muhammad Awe, was transported to Rangae Hospital with severe injuries.
The investigation revealed that the officer in question was driving at high speed while intoxicated and collided with the family’s motorcycle, leading to the immediate deaths of the mother and child at the scene, while the father sustained serious injuries, reported KhaoSod.
