Tragic family dispute in Udon Thani ends in fatal stabbing

A family dispute between two brothers ended in tragedy when a younger brother fatally stabbed his elder sibling in Udon Thani province.
Police were alerted at 9.30pm, Sunday, February 23, to a stabbing incident in Mueang Dong Yen district, where 35 year old Phumwat Suea was injured and later died in hospital. His brother, 32 year old Sakchai Hin, stayed at the scene and was taken into custody by the Dong Yen police.
The two brothers, sharing a mother but with different fathers, were drinking together when a disagreement arose. Sakchai stabbed Phumwat in the chest during the altercation.
Phumwat was rushed to Ban Dung Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to Udon Thani Central Hospital early the next morning.
The incident, which took place at a family gathering, left relatives and locals mourning. The site still bore evidence of the evening’s drinking, with bottles of alcohol scattered around.
At Dong Yen Police Station, relatives visited Sakchai, who showed signs of distress and asked them to take care of their mother.
A witness, 36 year old Phitak or Ae, who was drinking with the brothers that night, recounted the events. The gathering initially started peacefully with Phumwat inviting him to join.
Alongside the brothers, a female relative was also present. As the evening progressed, Sakchai made remarks about sending money home, hinting at his brother’s unemployment and financial dependence. Though these remarks were not made with hostility, they led to tensions.
Phumwat reacted by accusing his brother of slandering him, and both men stood up, escalating the situation. Phumwat armed himself with a guitar, while Sakchai grabbed a knife used for cutting lemons.
Phitak attempted to intervene, restraining Sakchai, while the female relative tried unsuccessfully to calm Phumwat. Phumwat swung the guitar, inadvertently hitting Phitak instead of Sakchai, who then broke free and stabbed his brother, reported KhaoSod.
Upon witnessing the stabbing, Phitak sought help from the police and informed the brothers’ mother. By the time he returned, the situation had calmed, with Phumwat lying injured and Sakchai returning to his nearby home. The event shocked the community, demonstrating the lethal potential of family disputes.
