Phuket mayoral election sees fierce competition

Registration for mayoral and municipal council candidates in Phuket opened yesterday with an energetic and competitive atmosphere as multiple teams vied for leadership positions. The registration period will continue until April 4, with many candidates eager to secure their place on the ballot.
Two prominent teams arrived at the Phuket City Municipality before the official opening at 8.30am, yesterday, March 31. Suphot La-ongphet, leader of the Rak Phuket Party and a well-known figure as a former Phuket Town Deputy Mayor, secured the number one spot on the ballot.
Phisit Sutthichindaowong, who leads the Phuket chapter of the Young Turks Party, drew the second position.
Their respective municipal council candidates were allotted numbers accordingly, with Rak Phuket receiving numbers one to six and Young Turks seven to 12. Supporters enthusiastically gathered, presenting flowers and marigold garlands to encourage the candidates.
Similarly, the Patong Municipality witnessed strong competition as three teams submitted applications. Pakrit Keesin of the Rak Patong Team was among the first to arrive, followed by Chalermluck Kebsup of the Patong Fah Mai Team and Lalita Maneesri of the Patong Creative Team.
A draw determined the ballot order, with Kebsup receiving number one, Maneesri number two, and Keesin number three.
In Chalong, Thanaporn Triwong, leader of the Ji Nui Party, who has recently completed a term as Chalong Mayor, secured the top position on the ballot.
Former long-standing Chalong Mayor Samran Jindapol of the Chalong Kao Mai Party took the second spot. Supporters of both teams turned out in large numbers to show their encouragement.
The municipal elections, set for May 11, will occur across 10 locations in Phuket, including Phuket Town, Patong Municipality, and various subdistrict municipalities such as Ratsada, Wichit, and Rawai.
Additionally, municipal council elections will occur in Kathu and Thepkrasattri Municipality. High voter turnout is anticipated, as the elections are expected to significantly influence Phuket’s local governance, according to an official report on yesterday’s registrations, reported The Phuket News.
According to election law, a 24-hour ban on alcohol sales will be enforced nationwide from 6pm on May 10 until 6pm on May 11.
