Boatload of change: Phuket makes waves with water transport plan

Phuket is set to make a splash with an innovative plan to tackle its notorious traffic woes—by taking to the water.
In a bid to ease the island’s increasing congestion, local officials gathered at Phuket Provincial Hall’s Smart Operations Center yesterday, February 17, to explore the integration of water transport systems, with a focus on a pioneering ‘Boat Taxi’ project.
Chairing the meeting was Doctor Somkid Chokhong, advisor to the Governor of Phuket, who joined forces with various agencies to thrash out strategies aimed at reducing road gridlock.
Discussions centred around the impact of ongoing construction and the potential for bypass roads, with the Phuket Marine Office leading the charge on developing an aquatic alternative to ease the landlocked chaos.
One of the exciting proposals on the table is the designation of new mooring buoy locations across the island, pinpointing prime spots in Sirinat National Park, Mai Khao, Sakhu, Cherng Talay, Kamala, Patong, and Karon.
The meeting also navigated the legal and regulatory hurdles, with stakeholders asked to weigh in on the framework needed to bring this bold initiative to fruition.
This wave-making scheme comes as part of a directive from the Prime Minister and a Cabinet resolution issued on January 13, aiming to prioritise efficient water transport development in Phuket as a means to boost the economy and tourism, reported Phuket News.
The solution promises not only to make a significant dent in traffic congestion but also to offer a sustainable commute option that aligns with the island’s growth and environmental needs.
In other transport news, Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has proposed constructing a monorail system as a strategic solution to combat the increasingly challenging traffic conditions across the island.
During an official press conference late last year at Provincial Hall, which focused on promoting tourism and associated policies, Gov. Sophon discussed the potential monorail project with several private sector organisations.
